The Power of the Simple Gift

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer to neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

—ETIENNE DE GRELLET

The alchemist in me loves to see the myriad ways in which the universe “multiplies the fishes and the loaves.” You don’t need something great or huge to change the quality of your life. A seed for transformation exists within the soul of each act of goodness. Faith, patience, endurance, and respect are also the central energies of your third chakra and those that help you discern what you need to do. All of us at one point or another have questioned our ability to make a difference, but the following letter from Scott L. is a tribute to a simple act that triggered the alchemical power of transformation.

Writes Scott, “My story is about my neighbor Phil M. He is a most unusual man, although he would never see it that way. In fact, I think he is part of a species that no longer exists. He is the most unselfish person I think I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. I first met him when I moved into the house next door. He was a janitor and worked nights, an unassuming, nice, and gentle guy. One day I needed help fixing a leak in the bathtub. He invited me inside. He had the most unbelievable collection of books, from Roman history to Nietzsche to Schopenhauer to Dickens; you name it, he had it. All of his walls contained bookshelves full of great novels. I remember feeling stupid for judging him because he was a janitor. He told me that he had 160 hours of English literature but never graduated from college.

“Anytime I needed anything, he offered to help. He helped me put my roof on, my deck, build my greenhouse, and build my gardens. His generosity knew no end for those who needed his assistance. Because of his help, we transformed our house, which was a dump, into a place we could sell and consequently move to a bigger house. He would never let us pay him back either. Once in a while we’d pay a vet bill for his cat or buy him chocolate. But we never got close to paying him back.

“As I got to know him, I learned he had a very tough upbringing. His father was an alcoholic and beat him and his brothers. Phil came away more intact than his brothers. He made a conscious effort to be positive and supportive when he had many reasons to be negative and quit. He took care of Margie, a woman who had been in a wheelchair for fifty years. He was the main reason she never had to go to a nursing home during the last years of her life. In the last months of her life, he left his job in order to take her to the hospital.
